TORONTO -- Canada’s reputation as a hotspot for birth tourism is rising fast, with new data reporting a 13 per cent increase in one year. Many B.C. residents are tuned into the practice of birth tourism in Canada and most want the federal government to launch an investigation into it, a new poll suggests. The next batch of data related to “birth tourism” in Canada will conceivably be available for scrutiny in August 2021. The figures will show the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the practice. Canada is one of the few developed countries, along with the United States, which grants citizenship to babies who are born here. The newborns are automatically granted Canadian citizenship. According to the latest statistics, nearly 5,000 babies were born to non-residents in Canada in 2018-19. Birth tourism is also not illegal in Canada — but there is a caveat.
